Waratah Cup
The Waratah Cup (known as the McDonalds Cup for sponsorship reasons) is a knockout cup competition in New South Wales, run by the governing body of football in NSW, Football NSW. Teams competing in the Waratah Cup come from the Premier League, Super League, NSW State League Division One, NSW State League Division Two and many semi-professional association clubs within New South Wales. The Cup is held during the NSW Premier League and state league seasons.
History
The Waratah cup is Football NSW answer to the English FA Cup knockout competition, which takes clubs from all divisions in England & Wales in a knockout format. Started in 1991 teams from the top 4 tiers of football in New South Wales compete against each other, as well as teams from non-league associations.[1]. Blacktown City Football Club and Sydney United have won the cup the most times with 3 a-piece, with Bankstown City Lions Football Club having won it twice. Sydney Crescent Star are the only non-league team to win the competition in 2004. Sutherland Sharks took out their first title in 2009.
